What Is an Online Word Counter?

A word counter helps you quickly measure the length and structure of text without manually counting words or characters.

This free online word counter calculates words, characters, characters without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and lines as you type or paste text into the editor.

It can be useful when preparing essays, assignments, reports, website content, articles, translations, advertisements, social media copy, speeches, scripts and other material with length requirements.

Unlike a counter that simply splits text whenever it finds a space, this tool uses modern language-aware text segmentation when supported by your browser. That is particularly useful when working with different scripts and languages.

TEXT STATISTICS

What Does the Word Counter Measure?

W

Word Count

Counts language-aware word-like segments instead of relying only on spaces.

A

Character Count

Counts user-perceived characters using grapheme segmentation where supported, making combined characters and emoji more meaningful.

↔

Characters Without Spaces

Shows a separate character total after excluding spaces, tabs and line breaks.

.

Sentence Count

Uses language-aware sentence segmentation in modern browsers rather than checking only for an English full stop.

Paragraphs & Lines

Helps you understand the structure and formatting of longer articles, assignments, reports and scripts.

⏱

Reading & Speaking Time

Provides approximate timing based on word count. Actual speed varies by language, reader, speaker and content complexity.

MULTILINGUAL WORD COUNTING

Count Text Across Different Languages & Scripts

The tool is designed for Unicode text and supports both left-to-right and right-to-left writing. Automatic mode detects several major writing systems, while the language selector lets you choose the intended language when more precise locale-specific segmentation is useful.

English العربية हिन्दी اردو فارسی 中文 日本語 한국어 ไทย বাংলা தமிழ் తెలుగు
1
Languages such as English, Arabic, Hindi, Urdu and many European languages normally use visible spacing between many words.
2
Chinese, Japanese and Thai require more sophisticated word-boundary detection because spaces alone are not a reliable way to identify every word.
3
Mixed-language text is supported, including content that combines Arabic and English or multiple Unicode writing systems.
!
Word boundaries are language-dependent. Academic institutions, publishers and applications may use different counting rules, so always follow their required definition when an official limit applies.
TRANSPARENT COUNTING

How Does This Multilingual Word Counter Work?

The tool uses browser-based Unicode and locale-aware segmentation where available.

01

Paste or Type

Enter your text directly or paste content from a document, website, email, article or other text source.

02

Language-Aware Segmentation

The browser identifies meaningful word, sentence and character boundaries using its internationalization capabilities.

03

Instant Statistics

Counts update while you edit, allowing you to adjust your text until it meets the required length.

Why can two word counters show different results? Counting conventions can differ for hyphenated terms, numbers, abbreviations, punctuation, contractions and languages without clear spaces between every word. If a school, publisher, translation client or platform specifies its own counting method, use that method as the final authority.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Word Counter FAQs

Is this word counter free?
Yes. The NABCO word counter can be used online without creating an account or purchasing a subscription.
Does the word counter support Arabic?
Yes. The editor supports right-to-left Arabic text, Arabic punctuation and mixed Arabic-English content. Modern browsers also provide locale-aware word and sentence segmentation.
Does it work with Hindi, Urdu and other Indian languages?
Yes. The tool is Unicode-aware and provides selectable locales for Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Marathi, Punjabi and Gujarati, together with automatic script detection for several major writing systems.
Can it count Chinese, Japanese and Thai text?
Yes in modern browsers. The tool uses locale-sensitive word segmentation rather than relying only on spaces, which is important for languages such as Chinese, Japanese and Thai.
Can I count Arabic and English in the same text?
Yes. You can paste mixed-language content into the same editor. The text box also uses automatic text direction so Arabic and other right-to-left text can display naturally.
What does the character count include?
The main character count includes spaces and line breaks and attempts to count characters as users perceive them through grapheme segmentation. A separate figure excludes whitespace.
Why can my word count differ from Microsoft Word or Google Docs?
Different applications can use different rules for punctuation, hyphenated terms, contractions, numbers and language-specific word boundaries. Small differences are therefore possible. If an institution or client specifies one application as the official counting method, use that application for the final required total.
Is my text uploaded when I use the counter?
The word-counting calculations in this tool run in your browser. The calculator code does not submit the text entered in the editor to NABCO in order to calculate the statistics.
Is there a 10,000-character limit?
This updated version does not impose the previous 10,000-character input limit. Very large documents may take longer to process depending on the browser, device and text length.
How is reading and speaking time estimated?
Reading time uses an approximate rate of 200 words per minute and speaking time uses approximately 130 words per minute. These are only planning estimates; actual speed differs by language, person and content complexity.
